Unique Summit Perspective

I had a unique perspective at the Willow Creek Global Leadership Summit this year.

In years past, I had been at a satellite campus near my home in Des Moines, IA, watching the experience like most everyone else. This year, however, was much different.

This year I was an official Summit blogger. That means I was responsible for tweeting, posting and sharing everything and anything I could about the Summit to the literally hundreds of thousands of people who joined us online.

Social Media Room During Summit 2011

Myself, along with Tim Schraeder, Jenni Catron, Matt Perman and Adam Jeske, were holed up in a social media bat cave deep beneath the stage at Willow Creek Community Church in South Barrington, IL. We had an all-access pass to capture the sights and sounds of the Summit and bring them live, via social media, to the waiting and watching world.

As the Summit transpired, I was impressed by the level of depth and maturity each speaker brought to the stage. From the humility of Mama Maggie Gorban, to the humor of John Dickson, to the encouraging challenge of Erwin McManus, each speaker called us to a deeper place.

But even with the amazing talent that was literally walking around right above us, I wasn’t most impressed by them.

“But Justin,” you might be asking, “do you have any idea who was in that room?”

I do, in fact. International best-sellers, innovators, business leaders and powerful preachers, to be precise. Talented, for sure, but not the most impressive.

I was blown away by the staff of Willow Creek Association. Everyone I encountered, from the Social Media team Summit speakers, including to Senior Pastor, Bill Hybels, was an absolute gem to work with. Not only that, they were some of the most teachable, humble people I’ve ever had the good fortune to meet. Refreshing.

In the world of Evangelicals, there are plenty of Willow Creek-clones. They see a church that’s doing well and falsely believe that emulating the building size, teaching material and staff structure will create a perfect copy.

It won’t.

I believe the staff of Willow Creek Community Church and Willow Creek Association has learned the meaning of 1 Peter 5:5, “God resists the proud but favors the humble.” God can’t help himself but to bless those who want to learn, grow and move his kingdom further. The staff and Willow Creek does just that.

And that’s what I learned at the Summit.

What Messed With My Head: Summit 2011

I’ve been on a journey this year asking God to show me what humility looks like in a leader’s life. Humility in many ways seems counter to the strength, confidence and dominance that many leaders display.

We wrestle with desires for honor and to be esteemed. We long to be known, but Proverbs reminds us of the power of humility:

“When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom.” Proverbs 11:2
“The fear of the Lord teaches a man wisdom, and humility comes before honor.” Proverbs 15:33

There’s a confident humility that comes from being deeply rooted in Christ’s calling for us. A confident humility that I believe is rarely seen…

But I saw it at this year’s Summit in two very specific moments:

It was in the extraordinary leadership of Bill Hybels as he shared the news of the Howard Schultz cancellation. I was inspired by a leader who spoke with confidence and conviction, yet with grace and forgiveness. He spoke boldly and called us as believers to respond wisely and kindly, but he displayed humility in his countenance that reflected the source of his wisdom.

And I was wrecked by the aura of humility that enveloped the room when Mama Maggie took the stage. She did not seek honor, in fact the honor of a standing ovation literally overwhelmed her to tears. But then this small, frail woman spoke with such eloquent conviction. She was extraordinarily confident yet profoundly humble.

These two moments of sincere humility are still messing with my head. How do we as leaders lead with confidence, yet be sure that our confidence is rooted in God’s calling and purpose for us rather than our own efforts or plans?

Summit Webcast with Bill Hybels

On Wednesday, August 24, Willow Creek Association president Jim Mellado interviewed Bill Hybels about some of the more stretching moments and ideas from this year’s Summit.

“We are fearless about challenging leaders to lead,” says Bill Hybels, founder of The Global Leadership Summit, Willow Creek Association’s annual leadership training event. That’s why each year, the Summit faculty line-up is intentionally selected to “stretch the learning bandwidth” of church leaders.

Summit 2011 in Review
Here are a few discussion starters for you and your team:

    • What session/moment during the Summit most impacted you, and why?

    • What leadership lesson do you desire for your team to process first? What
would you like your team to discuss at some point in the future?

    • Name a time when your organization faced a crisis or unexpected
event (in the last 12‐24 months). What went well about how it was
handled? What did you learn for the future?

    • What can your team set in motion right now (communication,
strategy, etc) that would prepare you for an unforeseen situation in
    the future?

    • Summarize in one or two sentences how attending this leadership
event impacted you as an individual. Looking at that summary, what
is the next step in continuing your leadership development?

Tough Callings

Mama Maggie Gobran & Bill Hybels at The Global Leadership Summit

I had the opportunity to help lead the first few minutes of Session 5 of the Summit (reading from Colossians 1, the Charlie Hall song “Center,” and the classic “Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus”) with a killer team of some of my favorite people. I love our team. And I’m not sure how it sounded around the country, but the people here in South Barrington sang their hearts out.

After a few more songs, I found my seat and got ambushed by the stories, songs, and prayers of people who have received hard callings…people who have given up everything to serve the poor and most forgotten people on earth. One after another, these stories pushed and pulled me into some deep and uncomfortable places, and I’m still feeling it. Here’s the question I can’t get beyond…

Am I in the place I am in, doing what I’m doing, because God has called me? Or is this the best gig I can find?

Am I following Jesus into the life he’s made me to live, or am I just unconsciously drifting from “what I think is best” to “what feels right” to “what makes the most sense?” Is it possible that I’m living the kind of comfortable life I’ve always wanted to live, but just overlaying spiritual language on top of it? When I pray “God, what do you want me to do?,” am I actually saying “God, here’s what I’m going to do…please bless it?” I’m not sure. These are heavy questions that I need to keep digging into.

Thanks for the grace to let me wrestle with all this out loud. What do you think? Do you ever feel a similar tension in your life?
