This year’s Global Leadership Summit was my 9th and by far one of the most impactful for me, personally. While there were endless ideas communicated and expressed that “rung my bell” the idea that stuck with me the most was the idea of vulnerability and humility being paramount in the life of a leader.
Being in Christian ministry for over a 10 years now, I’m sad to say that I haven’t seen humility overflowing from others, or myself. For whatever reason our Christian culture has perpetuated this notion that we have to have it all together and look, act, and talk the part.
However, I’ve slowly learned over the past few years that none of us will ever have it all together and have tried to release that pressure to perform in my own life. John Dickson beautifully reminded us of the power of humility in his session and how all of our culture is cruciform to the humility of Jesus on the cross. Patrick Lencioni challenged us to be vulnerable and express our weaknesses and uncertainties. And the quiet, humble witness of Mama Maggie Gorban showed us what it means to truly live that humility out in our everyday lives.
I think everything else that was shared on the stage at the GLS – having the courage to make tough decisions, being willing to “poke the box” and try new things, and to relentlessly trust God to do the impossible, to create the future – all hinge on the level of humility we posses as individuals and leaders.
My biggest take-away from this year is this: To get over myself and my talents [or lack thereof] and to let God do what He will in and through me as I willingly and humbly give myself to Him and what He has for me to do. I don’t have to be perfect, I just have to be willing to express that on my own I’m unable.
